For the design of the brochure, I chose to represent the character, Storm, as a vertical sequence of clouds. The inside of the brochure is laid out in a two column grid, alternating between the mutant’s biography and conventional comic book images using Storm’s current character design. The two column grid simulates the panel layout of a comic book, while the back cover breaks up smaller chunks of her character specs using typography and a diagonal layout to emphasize her weather-based superpowers.
Conceptually, I focused on the mow-hawk version of Storm’s character design, from the Age of Apocalypse story arc. I wanted the focus to be on the character as a representation of a strong black woman and draw a parallel between that and another strong black female icon, Grace Jones. This is why the fold out poster is an overt visual homage to the 1985 album cover for “Slave to the Rhythm”.
